The late fall season is upon us. The last bit of crops have been brought in, I've been busily winterizing my house in preparation for the deep cold of winter, and there is a sense of the world dying as it turns towards darkness. As is typical for modern pagan types, this leads to a focus in this season on our beloved dead and our ancient forebearers. This presents the results of some brief trancework on my part to get to know some of those of the deceased who I did not know in life, and some of their stories and lessons.
Musically, what makes this a bit interesting is the unusual rhythm. For something like this, rhythm can be a bit approximate to begin with, but the rhythmic pattern really throws things off with the dotted quarters that turn the rhythm into something that floats a bit. How that's happening, in a nutshell, is breaking the standard even rhythmic pattern into one of 2+3+3, with one short beat (the eighth notes) followed by 2 long beats (either 2 dotted quarters or 1 dotted half). This doesn't even match a fairly common drumming pattern of 3+3+2, so it feels unnatural, which is of course the intent.
